Adaptive Clothing for Spinal Cord Injuries

When I first became paralyzed, I found myself limited in what I could wear. I couldn’t use particular zippers, button my shirts, or wear my favorite pants because they caused pressure sores.

Below is a list of adaptive clothing and vendors I use, trialed, or heard about through peers. I encourage you to do your own research, and I hope this will bring some new additions to your wardrobe.

Zip Grips

Zip Grips are plastic rings that attach to any zip. Zips can be difficult to operate for those with hand function problems, this simple solution can make it a lot easier. Put your finger in the ring to easily pull open and close zips. No more getting caught in the rain and spending ages trying to get your coat done up!

1-Up One Handed Hair Tie

The 1-Up Hair Tie is a method of creating a ponytail for those with one-hand or those who have reduced hand function. You can also use it to create pigtails, buns or wear it as a headband. The device consists of a long hair elastic with a toggle on it. You can use it to create a ponytail with one hand or with hands that have reduced function by putting the elastic around your head and pulling. You can then wind the excess string around the ponytail. There are several methods of using the 1-Up Hair tie to suit different abilities.

Socks with Loops

Putting socks on when you have reduced finger function can be a tricky business. These Socks with Loops have a ribbon loop sewn on either side of the top of the sock, allowing you to put your socks on independently.

Magnetic Shoe Laces

Just lace Zubits magnets onto your own shoelaces. When separated, you can easily slip into a wide open shoe.  Close the magnets with a click and go for a run or play sports. Quickly take your shoes off hands-free by stepping on your heel to pop out.

Magna Ready Dress Shirt
