Bowel Management for Spinal Cord Injuries

It wasn’t until I got injured that I realized one of the toughest challenges of my recovery was managing my bowels. Conditions like autonomic dysreflexia, incontinence, and constipation, along with the use of laxatives, suppositories, enemas, and fiber supplements have transformed a natural bodily function into a hour (or longer) endeavor. Through discussions with doctors and occupational therapists, I have compiled a list of alternatives to try, aimed at easing the burden of this aspect of this injury.

Suppositories

Therafin Toileting Aids

Therafin Toileting aids have been designed for those with disabilities that affect bowel function, such as a spinal cord injury. These users often also have reduced hand function and therefore need a device that is easy to hold. The toileting aids have a long handle to allow you to easily reach. The handle has an adjustable plastic strap to allow you to hold the device with reduced hand function. Pull the strap around the base for left or right handed use.

Peristeen

Peristeen Plus empties the bowel by introducing water into the bowel via the rectum using a rectal catheter. It is performed while sitting on the toilet. The water acts to flush out the stool, promoting the evacuation of the contents of the lower colon. If carried out daily or every other day as prescribed, the technique may help a user stay continent for up to 48 hours.

Navina Irrigation System is an easy to use, high volume irrigation solution. By using Navina Irrigation system, you can achieve a regular bowel routine and benefit from the increased freedom that this brings. The Navina Irrigation System can significantly reduce the time spent on the toilet, worrying about constipation and the risk of bowel accidents.

Aqua Flush

The Aquaflush® Transanal Irrigation System makes bowel management easier by helping you establish an effective bowel care routine, and providing you with the confidence to live life the way you choose.
